From 1 October 2026, the fees for a change of status of residence and for an extension of period of stay move from a flat ¥6,000 to a scale based on the period granted, reaching ¥75,000 at the counter. The permanent residence fee rises from ¥10,000 to ¥200,000 — twenty times higher. Applications received by 30 September 2026 keep the old fee, even if the permission is granted on or after 1 October.

Reduced fees apply to those in hardship where humanitarian consideration is warranted (¥10,000 for change and extension; ¥20,000 for permanent residence, limited to the spouse or child of a Japanese national, permanent resident or special permanent resident), and some diplomatic/official cases are exempt.
What to do now
- ✓If your status expires within about three months, file the extension before 30 September and pay the old fee.
- ✓If you already meet the permanent residence requirements, filing before 30 September saves ¥190,000.
- ✓What matters is the date your application is RECEIVED, not the date it is decided.
- ✓Online filing is cheaper at most tiers — but payment is by convenience store or bank only, revenue stamps are not accepted, and a separate transaction fee applies.
