Chicken vs. Salmon: The Supermarket Staredown

You’re in Life, staring at the meat section. Is the expensive salmon *actually* that much better than chicken?

It’s a question as old as time, or at least as old as your first paycheck in Japan. You want to be healthy. You *should* be healthy. But the siren song of cheap-as-chips chicken breast is hard to ignore, especially when salmon costs, well, what salmon costs.

So let's settle this with some actual facts, not just the voice of your wallet screaming in protest.

The Protein Question

Chicken and salmon are both protein powerhouses. They have all the good stuff your body needs to repair itself after you miss your station and have to walk 20 minutes home in the rain.

Technically, skinless chicken breast packs a slightly bigger protein punch per gram. If your goal is to get absolutely massive, chicken has a tiny edge. For the rest of us just trying to eat a real meal, the difference is negligible.

The Deal with Fat

Here’s where things get interesting. Chicken breast is famously lean, the reliable workhorse of a thousand meal preps. Salmon, on the other hand, is fatty. And that’s its superpower.

We're talking Omega-3 fatty acids. The stuff that’s amazing for your heart and brain, and the main reason health experts tell you to eat fish. That little grill drawer in your Japanese kitchen? It was practically born to cook a perfect salmon fillet. Chicken has basically zero Omega-3s. So with salmon, you’re paying a premium for that fatty goodness.

The Verdict

Honestly, the winner depends on what you need. For budget-friendly, versatile, high-protein meals you can make in bulk, nothing beats chicken.

But for those brain-boosting, heart-helping Omega-3s, salmon is the undisputed champ. The smartest move? Don't pick a side. Do what most of us do: live on chicken for most of the week, then treat yourself to a nice piece of salmon once or twice. That way, you get the best of both worlds without having to remortgage your tiny apartment.

Besides, the healthiest food is the one you actually cook instead of letting it stare at you from the fridge while you order something else. 😅
