Your Visa Renewal Is About to Get Way More Expensive

That ¥6,000 fee for your visa renewal? Get ready for it to cost as much as a domestic flight.

What's Changing?

You know the drill. You survive the mountain of paperwork, the waiting, the vague instructions, and finally get that visa renewal approved. Then you head to the post office to buy a ¥6,000 revenue stamp, stick it on a form, and hand it over. It's the last little annoyance in a long, annoying process.

Well, the Immigration Services Agency has looked at that ¥6,000 fee and thought, "We can do better." They've just unveiled a proposal to dramatically increase these fees, and base them on the length of your stay.

Under the new plan, a permit for 3 months or less would be ¥10,000. A 1-year visa renewal would jump to ¥33,000. And if you're lucky enough to get a 5-year visa, you'll be paying a cool ¥75,000 for the privilege. Yep, you read that right. 🫠

And the Grand Prize: Permanent Residence

Oh, you thought it stopped there? For those of us playing the long game, aiming for that coveted Permanent Resident status, the news is even wilder.

The application fee for Permanent Residence (Eiju) is set to increase from the current ¥10,000 to ¥200,000.

Two hundred. Thousand. Yen. That's a new laptop. That's a trip back home. That's a reward for years of paying taxes, contributing to the pension system, and mastering the art of separating your plastics from your burnables. It feels… personal.

But... Why?

According to the agency, the new fees are calculated based on the actual costs. They figure it costs about ¥10,000 per person just for the administrative work (staff, office space, etc.).

The rest of it? It's to cover wider "foreigner policy costs," which they've calculated at about ¥20,000 per person, per year. What those policies are, exactly, is anyone's guess. Maybe it's the budget for all those multi-language posters explaining how to use a squat toilet. They expect this change to bring in an extra ¥69 to ¥92 billion per year.

So, What Now?

The government wants to implement these changes as early as October 1st this year. Before that, they'll open a public comment period where you can officially submit your opinion on the matter.

It's your one chance to formally say, "¥200,000 is, respectfully, insane." Will it change anything? Who knows. But it’s something.
