Japan's Visa Fees Just Jumped 5x After 48 Years

That 3,000 yen visa fee you were used to? From July 1st, it's 15,000 yen.

What just happened

Yeah, you read that right. Five times the price. This is the first time Japan has raised visa fees in 48 years.

From July 1st, 2026, a single-entry visa goes from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen. The multiple-entry one that so many of us rely on is jumping from 6,000 yen to a steep 30,000 yen.

I remember paying my 6,000 yen fee a few years back and thinking it felt surprisingly cheap to secure my life here for a bit. Guess that era is officially over.

So, why the sudden change?

The government's official line is about catching up with Western countries and building a 'stricter' immigration system. They're pointing to places like the US, where visa renewals can run you up to $470, or Germany, at nearly 100 euros.

So by that logic, our new 15,000 yen fee—about $95—still looks like a bargain. Maybe?

A law they passed last month actually allows them to raise these fees by up to *thirty* times. So I guess we should be thankful it was only five.

What's the fallout?

The former foreign minister, Toshimitsu Motegi, went on record saying they don't expect this to hurt international tourism. He said the old price was set in 1978 and just needed to be adjusted for inflation and the yen's wild ride.

Which, okay, fair enough. A lot has changed since the year the first Space Invaders arcade game came out.

But for a family of four trying to visit, that's an extra 48,000 yen just to get your feet in the door. You feel that.
