Your Konbini Coffee Habit Might Actually Be Healthy

Turns out drinking 5 cups of coffee a day might cut your liver cancer risk by 47%. Yes, even the decaf stuff.

I’m sitting here on my third BOSS coffee of the morning, so this feels like personal validation. A recent study just gave a huge green light to all of us who basically survive on caffeine to get through the week.

It’s almost a little too convenient, you know?

So, what's the news?

A UK study published in a journal with the very serious name *Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology* looked at the health data of about 355,000 people for over a decade. The researchers weren't messing around.

They found that people who drank five or more cups of coffee a day had a 47% lower risk of developing liver cancer and a 32% lower risk of cirrhosis compared to non-coffee drinkers. It even lowered the risk of dying from liver disease by 42%.

Suddenly my daily route—station NewDays, office Tully's, afternoon FamilyMart, pre-overtime 7-Eleven—doesn't seem so excessive. It’s… preventative care?

But it's not the caffeine

Here’s the part that really got me. The benefits were basically the same for both regular and decaf coffee. This suggests the magic isn't from the caffeine that keeps us awake during those endless meetings.

Apparently, coffee is packed with other things like polyphenols and chlorogenic acid. According to the doctors on the study, like Dr. Hyunsuk Kim, these compounds have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that are great for your liver.

So if you’re sensitive to caffeine but still want to feel like you’re doing something healthy while sipping a warm beverage, decaf is officially a good option. ☕

So I should start chugging coffee?

Probably not. The doctors are quick to say that if you don't already drink coffee, you don't need to start now just for this. More research is still needed, as always.

But for those of us already deep in the game, it’s a nice thought. That while you're battling the morning rush on the Yamanote line, your lukewarm ¥110 cup of coffee is quietly fighting a little battle for your liver.
