A Matchmaker's 5 Rules for Dating in Japan

So, a top Japanese matchmaker published a guide for guys, and it's basically another manual for existing here.

I stumbled upon this article by Minako Sekiguchi, who's a big deal in the matchmaking world. She ran a marriage consultation agency after being a No. 1 hostess in Ginza for nine years, so you know she’s seen some things. She listed the five things women look for in a "marriageable" man, and it feels... very specific.

The Small Promises Manual

First rule: keep tiny promises. If you say you’ll message, you message. If you say you’ll be there at 15:55, you are not there at 15:56. It's not about grand gestures, it's about being as reliable as the Yamanote Line schedule. Which makes sense, I guess. We all live and die by that schedule anyway.

The 'Remain Calm' Directive

Next up: emotional stability. The ideal partner doesn't get flustered if a train is delayed or a restaurant is full. They just calmly find an alternative, without ever showing a hint of frustration. Meanwhile, my plan B for a full restaurant is usually just going to the nearest konbini for a sad onigiri. Apparently this is not the way. 🤷

The Listening Protocol

They also have to listen without immediately trying to "fix" the problem. You know, when someone says they're tired from work, you're not supposed to suggest a 10-point plan for optimizing their workflow. You just nod and say "Taihen desu ne" until you are one with the universe. It's active listening as a martial art.

The Final Tests

The last points are about being realistic with money (not flashy, just stable) and always thinking of "us"—like choosing a date spot that isn't a nightmare for her to get home from. Which is all very sweet and considerate, of course. It's just that when you see it all laid out like a spec sheet for a new piece of hardware, it explains so much.
