Aussie Beef Is Now Pricier Than Domestic

My entire cheap-eats strategy for living in Japan just imploded in the meat aisle.

The Great Price Flip

I was at the supermarket, on autopilot, reaching for the Australian beef because, you know, that's the affordable option. Then I actually looked at the price. My brain short-circuited. The Aussie steak was about ¥120 *more* per 100g than the domestic Japanese beef right next to it.

I thought I was seeing things, maybe I needed glasses. But no. I looked over at the fish section and it was happening there, too. Norwegian salted mackerel was ¥50 more expensive per 100g than the Japanese kind. We've officially entered the upside-down.

So, Why Is This Happening?

The culprit is that historically weak yen we keep hearing about on the news. It's at a nearly 40-year low against the dollar, which means the price to import anything is skyrocketing.

The deputy manager of one supermarket in Aichi basically said, "We never thought it would come to this." Buddy, neither did we. I feel like my entire understanding of grocery shopping here has been a lie. All the old rules are out the window.

What This Means for Your Wallet

It’s not just a few yen here and there. One research group calculated that this mess will cost the average household an extra ¥14,596 a year. It gets worse the more you earn. That’s a few nice dinners out, just gone. 💸

It’s not just our grocery bills, either. Businesses that rely on imports are going bankrupt at a higher rate than last year. So now I'm just standing in the store, looking at two packs of beef, both of them expensive for different reasons, feeling completely lost. The cheap option is now the fancy one and the fancy one is... the cheap one? My head hurts.
