Another Day, Another Price Hike in Japan
That morning slice of toast and late-night cup noodle are about to cost you more.
What's Happening?
Just when we thought our wallets could maybe, possibly, take a little break, Japan has other plans. As of July 1st, another wave of price hikes hit, affecting 2,566 different items. Yes, you read that right.
This is the first time since April that over 2,000 products have gone up in price in a single month. The two biggest victims of the price-hike-inator? Bread (1,078 items) and processed foods, especially instant noodles (1,084 items). Your beloved shokupan and菓子パン (kashi pan) could be going up by 5% to 15%. Oof.
Who's Feeling It?
Pretty much everyone. One 70-year-old guy told reporters he's just switching to whatever's cheapest to get by. Same, sir, same.
In a moment of pure, relatable family budget drama, one mom said that since bread is a daily necessity for the kids, the first thing to get cut would have to be... Dad's beer. Sorry, dads. 😬
Even the store managers are bummed out. The manager at one Aomori co-op said, "It's painful to see customers shopping with such grim faces. I wish it would just stop already."
Why, Though?
The usual suspects are to blame: the never-ending rise in costs for raw materials and shipping. It's the song that never ends.
But this time there's a new verse. The ongoing instability in the Middle East is apparently pushing up crude oil prices, which has a knock-on effect on, well, everything. It’s a fun little chain reaction where the end result is always us paying more for cup noodles.
So, It's Over Now, Right?
Ha. No. Not even close. Projections show about 1,900 more items getting more expensive in August.
And then in September? Another 3,000 food and drink items are expected to see price increases, which would be the highest number for any month in 2026. So, uh, get ready for a long, expensive summer.
